We've just been to see #TheJungle at St Ann's Warehouse.

Unfortunately it looks like the entire season has sold out (even with the first extra extended period) so if you dont already have tickets you may be SOL.
Made me think a lot about how removed i feel from the situation as i have some deep philosophical issues with the whole premise of The Jungle from an economics point of view (....ironic i know being that im living/working in another country).
There is a great line in the play that summarises my entire thinking about economic migrants that Ammar Haj Ahmad delivers about the character Norullah around how he wants to be in the UK to go to school, be a good citizen, work hard (eg. create GDP output) - my whole fundamental belief here is that what you are actually doing is stealing from the GDP output of Afghanistan, that by allowing refugees to travel from one country to another....you are benefitting the host country but creating economic theft from the future of the mother country.
Its a harsh position I know.....and not one that is shared by many people.
You might also say but how can this apply to non-economic migrants eg someone escaping war/tyranny, my thinking there is that "the west" (eg cowboys and indians west-not political west) was won by people banding together and overcoming adversity through 'building cities' (another fundamental goal in The Jungle), and only a good guy can overcome a bad guy.
Its ironic thinking especially when this week there are protests in Hungary over Victor Orban's "Slave Law" that forces "overtime" due to labour shortages when Hungary has been the most strident country opposing accepting migrant refugees
https://www.dw.com/en/hungarian-workers-protest-slave-law-overtime-rules/a-46649065
Either way its a play that is well worth seeing - hopefully St Ann's Warehouse will be able to give it a second extension so that even more people will get to see it.

Time for USA troops to leave Syria
You have to wonder how much this is costing per day and where the money could be better spent eg building bridges/roads in the USA - heck Nancy Pelosi how about we tie to border wall to removal of USA bases and troops in Syria and we would probably come out in front.

Bios chip removal without a PLCC extractor
Who would have thought a bent paperclip would solve the day.
Found this suggestion on google while trying to swap out a bios motherboard chip today.....bent the last 5mm of a paper clip with needle nose pliers as shown below and it totally works, popped straight out.
Felt total MacGyver worthy.

Spouses of H-1B visas banned from working
https://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/news/2018/10/19/spouses-of-h-1b-visa-holders-banned-from-working.html
As a spouse who came to the USA on a spousal visa (I was on a L2 as part of my wifes intra-company L1) i find this very short sighted on the part of the President.
However.....since when has that ever stopped him making bad mistakes.
(BTW signing up for a greencard is a terrible idea....make sure you google "Heart Taxation Act" or click here http://bit.ly/HeartTaxationAct to understand the issues around going down this path).

First Man
Jodie and i just watched First Man
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1213641/
Congratulations to Ryan Gosling. We weren't actually planning on seeing this at the movies and ended up watching it by accident. But very glad we did as it was an amazing piece of true cinema art.
Very interesting watching this 50 years later in a time when we are just on the cusp of "space tourism" in that it shows the gritty true engineering nature of space flight.
I came across this review - perfectly accurate.
"First Man" is so immersive in its glitchy, hurtling, melting-metal authenticity that it makes a space drama like "Apollo 13" look like a puppet show.

Bloomberg SuperMicro article
Reading this my thinking is huh? Whats the big deal - https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-10-04/the-big-hack-how-china-used-a-tiny-chip-to-infiltrate-america-s-top-companies
I'm not sure if the Bloomberg reporter either doesn't understand the technology OR its a govt led PR propaganda piece they are making out this was a hack, its simply management access "out of band".
Here’s a shocker......every CPU made by Intel since the P6 in 2008 (eg Core2 Duo's and Core 2 Quads) has something very similar.

American finance websites commenting on Australian property
American finance websites commenting on Australian property.....
https://wolfstreet.com/2018/10/01/australia-sydney-melbourne-house-price-condo-unit-bubble-new-construction-supply/#comment-154939
Every housing bubble requires the connivance of the banks and their regulators, and Australia is no exception. A banking scandal of enormous proportions has partially come to light via the Royal Commission investigation
My Thoughts;
1/ Australia doesn't have jingle mail.....so borrowers are unlikely to leave banks on the hook for anything.
2/ Australia has 2 big cities and 5 country towns.....so borrowers tend not to sell because they are moving interstate for a better job.
3/ Australia only has 2 "high cost cities" eg imagine trying to work out cost of living in the USA if 50% of people lived in LA and NY......
4/ Unless you bought in the last 6 months of the peak.....you are still in the money. eg 15% up in 2017 means down 5% you are still ahead.
5/ We don't have strippers buying 5 properties (well not as many as the USA) so you wont have a Las Vegas style contagion happening in Australia.
Instead what will happen is, as banks increase mortgage rates due to RBA and out of cycle mortgage increases....hard working people will pay down their debt and reduce leverage.
Snoozefest.
Cheers,
Dean
Oh and people wanting a 40% crash so they can "get in to the market" are still going to be whining in 5 years everything is still too expensive.....

Google domain naked url forward problem
Ugh......don't know why this isn't more obvious in the help docs....but I found it online after 20 mins of futzing around trying different combinations.
When you register a domain with google domains you can set up to 100 sub-domain forwarding etc eg
www.Acme.com
Sales.Acme.com
Accounts.Acme.com
The problem I was finding is if I typed in www.Acme.com it was forwarding fine. However, if I typed in http://Acme.com it wasn't working at all.
Basically would return no such domain....... (even though I had already setup the *.Acme.com wildcard to work - and it was working fine, eg if I typed in random subdomains that didn't exist.....would send them to www.Acme.com just fine).
What I was missing is forwarding "the google naked domain" and how you do that is setup subdomain forward as you always would......but then enter just @ on its own in the subdomain then fill out www.Acme.com as the destination.
Ugh like I said.....simple but lots of futzing around to get there.
Hopefully through SEO this post will help someone out :)

Interesting point about nothing major to 2020 and govt manipulation changing the rules (my personal echo-chamber...?) i still think there will be a short dip in March when people start filing USA tax returns and learning what the Trump tax cuts mean to them.

Are we being racist when it comes to live sheep exports?
https://www.facebook.com/stockjournal/posts/10157716736644622?
Makes you wonder if we could ever see a future where the consumption of meat is banned entirely...... eg this political movement seems to have come about fairly rapidly.....
Whilst i support penalties against mistreatment of sheep, and some carriers have done a shockingly bad job so deserve to be fined/lose their license; I wonder how city folk would feel is we said sheep can only be transported a maximum of 240 kilometers before processing and their retail prices in Coles/Woolies doubled overnight as a reflection of this.....because basically this is what we are saying to customers in the Middle East eg you MUST purchase refrigerated or frozen meat from Australia and you MUST have the refrigeration/power capabilities that come along with that requirement.

DDNS client for windows
I've come across a problem recently in that my Zywall 110 only has a max of 10 DDNS entries
- https://twitter.com/deancollins/status/1035287844066152449
Ive been slowly moving my domains over from www.Noip.com to http://domains.google as they come up for renewal but Google domains uses Dynamic DNS (eg dyndns2 protocol).
You would think finding a windows update client would be easy right....?
Nope - they are all either scripts you can update dynamic dns urls from a bat file etc or are for unix/Linux installations or a lot of android versions (....im assuming so you can browse to your phone via ip to do updates).
Ugh for some reason the exact solution I was looking for was hidden away after 1 hour of google searching / links etc DynSite - http://noeld.com/dynsite.asp
Supports a ton of providers located at http://noeld.com/services.htm
Supports a ton of routers for obtaining networked ip address - http://noeld.com/routers.htm (not the Zywall 110....but it can obtain ip address with a websearch)
Took me a bit to work out the configuration (my dumb mistake....) see below, but this windows client does exactly what I need so hopefully with some SEO magic this link will help someone else out find DynSite - http://noeld.com/dynsite.asp faster.
Cheers,
Dean

#DPSS18 - Dawn of Private Space Science Symposium
Just spent 2 very enjoyable days watching the livestream of the #DPSS18 conference.
http://www.privatespacescience.com/
The Dawn of Private Space Science Symposium is a platform to facilitate communication between the private space industry and scientists. The symposium brings together leading scientists, foundations, corporations, policy makers, and commercial spacelines under one roof to create opportunities for scientific research in space.
The stream is a bit rough eg you need to fastforward over the starts/breaks but the content/discussions are pretty good (it went for 2 days - so Saturday is video 1, Sunday is video 2)

EU questioning of Mark Zuckerberg
I'm @NowWatching the European questioning of Mark Zuckerberg.
Wondering what people are thinking about these claims by the EU on how Facebook is "just wrong" and people in Europe don’t want to use it apart from lol...apart from millions of people keep signing up and using it every day.
I keep thinking.....he doesn't get paid enough.
The smartass asking 6 questions without pausing for answers/or the questions to be written down with final part 6 saying Facebook should be broken up because he wants to see a European competitor.....
My response would be GAGF.
I've never been pro Facebook.....but these questions are a witch hunt.
No wonder Europe is in such a mess.
Eg the guy who was late to the start of the meeting because of the strikes in France but now asking for $198 compensation for every facebook users data.
Or the Irish politician wants Facebook to prevent fake accounts (idiot Irish kid who posted embarrasing sex photo and killed himself).....but the other EU politicians want to ban Facebook from building shadow accounts. (Which are used to prevent fake account generation).
This is why EU is screwed up they can't agree on what they want.
Lastly....just plain ugh, this questioning format is ridiculous but well done by Mark in not getting frustrated with their incompetence.
