Gagan Suri you are a lifesaver !!!!

Burn 6000 calories a day sitting

Really interesting article about how grand-master chess players can burn 6000 calories a day just sitting.

Its totally changed my thinking around being cerebral and even if you are in a role where you are just "thinking" that being in peak physical shape will change your performance level of being able to "think faster"

lol i spent at least 30 mins yesterday while day trading doing pushups and situps in front of my computer monitors while waiting for price action to move where i wanted it to between trades :) I guess we'll see.

Ok folks.....we need a word for "Plant based meats" im nominating.... "Pleat".

So you can have "Beef Pleat", "Chicken Pleat" or even "Fish Pleat".

But there is no way we can continue to call pea protein based "products" using the word "meat".

The Loudest Voice

I'm @NowWatching E7 of #TheLoudestVoice essential watching.

 Amazing acting by @russellcrowe

Can you believe these photos are of the same guy that was Maximus in Gladiator.

It's hard to know how much is fat suit and how much weight he put on but his acting of Roger Ailes is perfection and been a super interesting mini series, especially when juxtaposed against the upcoming Trump 2020 re-election.

Proposed illegal cash laws in Australia

Absolutely ridiculous.

Lets be clear im ridiculously strict when it comes to taxes and i've never smudge the line even a little bit, but this law saying you cant save in cash is DRACONIAN and anti-citizen.

If i choose NOT to trust the government OR banks and choose NOT to keep my savings in a bank that i think may potentially fail and do a bad job.....then that is my right to do so.

Thats does NOT make someone a criminal (irony is i dont have bundles of cash.......i just dont want the Aust govt to remove my right to do so).

Nothing really matters......

This article sums up how im feeling this week perfectly.

Feeling the weight of entropy this week. To be honest....feel like chucking the whole thing in and going sailing.

Vegetarian butchers

Great article in todays NY Times. I think more people should have to butcher their own meals once in a while, would give them more of an appreciation of what it is that they are eating.

Why all the hate against this ship??

Yes Amazon may not have paid income taxes on profits as they keep investing revenue into building the company even bigger but Bezos personally paid a ton of income taxes and his employees who have jobs did as well..

I dont get why people are so upset at him being rich AND NOT thinking....wow i should go start a business myself and get rich as well.

Hero or Villain

Four Corners on Australian ABC TV did a story on Julian Assange last night.

Available for viewing for everyone around the world on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtelzRAPlT8&list=PLn2RjxYNpcayaQ5EBE9pp2axA418qJNqP&index=2&t=0s

Smart software enabled real estate

Read this really interesting article in the paper version of Fortune magazine on the weekend.

Love that they are spending an estimated $600,000 in renovations each and every day......talk about economies of scale (and that their software can predict rehab costs to within 5% on average).

Wonder if something similar would fly in Australia.

So you worked your 40 quarters.... but its time to go home-what happens to all that Social Security you paid?

The only 2 countries they WONT send SS to is North Korea and Cuba.

This is whether you are a citizen or not.

There are certain countries where you have to "Proof of life" yourself after 6 months (at an embassy etc Ukraine Uzbeckistan etc etc).

But if you have "earned your own" Social Security (eg 40 quarters) and are a citizen of these countries

Then you will keep getting paid after 6 months even if you have given up citizenship and are no longer a citizen/resident of the USA.

All the information is here https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10137.pdf

Or use this tool https://www.ssa.gov/international/payments_outsideUS.html

There is a good article on tax withholdings etc here at https://www.investopedia.com/advisor-network/articles/social-security-benefits-nonus-citizens/ (short answer is they withhold 30% and then you have to file taxes to get some of it back).

Its pretty simple really.

"Iran" targets oil tankers

Excellent reporting by @Tina_Davis on @BloombergTV about the very suspect choice of targets......well done. Thank you for being a real reporter and not chowing down on what we are being fed.

It heartens me to see how many social media comments there are after Pompeo's press conference from the State Department where ordinary people are calling out the USA on this BS and his claims.......but it also saddens me that so many many people no longer trust their government.

It shouldn't be this way.

AFP raid ABC News in Sydney :(

“In a free state, there should always be an inquirer asking on behalf of the people.” - John Norvell

Very disappointed in the Australian government tactics here. The fact that these articles are written last year but the raids were held off until after the election disgusts me.

If your decisions can't handle a little sunlight.....then should you be doing them at all?

Shame on you ScoMo

Sydney Harbour

Wow how crazy still the harbour is for this shot.

Thursday, May 23, 2019

Nothing to worry about huh....

For all those people who said Assange had nothing to worry about and he should go to Sweden and face the made up rape charges......i give you todays NY Times.

Just as Wikileaks' editor in chief anticipated, the DoJ has revealed that a grand jury in Virginia has returned a new 18-count superseding indictment against Assange that includes violations of the Espionage Act. Significantly raising the punishment threshold (from a maximum of 5.5 years under the previous indictment to the prospect of a DEATH SENTENCE for violating the Espionage Act).

This country is messed up. If the government is killing innocent people and cant handle the sunlight.....is what your government doing in your name appropriate???

Australian election

Australian election post mortem happening now....but most of it is just plain wrong.

Any politician who says they lost the election because of the media or advertising deserves to lose.

You only have to look at AOC and Trump on how they get their message out to realise that people truly can be reached if you have something decent to say.

Personally i think neither party had anything innovative to offer this election and thats why people voted for the stability of the existing incumbents.....but thats just my opinion....and everyone has an asshole as well.

Basically Labor lost/ the LNP didnt win it, until Labor realises their mistake.....will happen again. As for blaming people rejecting labors plans for holding onto Dividend Imputations......uhm yep because paying tax WHICH WAS NEVER OWED IN THE FIRST place is dumb.

Its would be like saying.....so sad you are owed a tax refund this year....you should have planned better.....we'll hold on to it until next year and you can have it back then (unless of course.....the ATO owes you a tax refund that year as well.....thanks for being a good aussie).

This said.....democracy won eg everyone voted, we all got our Democracy Sausages, no one died at the end of a bullet/bomb, and thats a great thing and something to be thankful for

Desi Lydic: Abroad

While Australians are all "politically focussed" this weekend really enjoying the Desi Lydic Abroad special on female politicians recently.....really worth watching.

Some really good insights as to "why"....and more importantly "how to get it fixed asap......'ish'"

Aurum by the Australian ballet

Got to see Aurum by the ABT at The Joyce theater last night https://joyce.org/performances/australian-ballet

Aurum was a spectacular piece of dance - https://australianballet.com.au/tv/aurum-beauty-in-the-broken

And seeing it at The Joyce was extra special as cheaper than seeing the ABT in Sydney and we we close enough to hear them breath in the 3rd row (no orchestra pit at The Joyce).

Stage is a little cramped/small but for the pieces they did, worked fine.

Wanted to give a shoutout to Amanda McGuigan absolute star of the night, on point and nailed every moment, has the ability to show soul and emotions in facial expressions and movement that is being dropped for technique by too many dancers.......

The use of the gold metallic floor and reflective lighting was truly spectacular.

Brooklyn Bridge Park wharf conversion

Awesome day out in Brooklyn heights. Hard to believe this park used to be a wharf eg. I'm actually standing above the water taking these photos.

Such a great asset for the Brooklyn Heights area.

Australian Dance Theatre at The Joyce

Just got back from seeing the Australian Dance Theatre company at The Joyce, wow at some of their abilities/choreography, much respect.

Though having gelato with my espresso before the show.....probably not the best idea, lol sitting there all fat and content watching these ripped bods sweat :)

They have Australian ballet performing next Sunday night at the same location so looking forward to that one as well.

Turn the BQE into a parking lot/park = awesome idea

Turning the existing cantilever into parking makes a ton of sense.

At $500 a month for existing spots in Brooklyn Heights (all of which are full) there is a ton of unmet demand that could be an ongoing revenue source for the parks dept.

Biosphere 2

"It’s been 25 years since two people were arrested for an attack on Biosphere 2 - people who had just spent two years inside it. I take a look back at one of science’s stranger moments for the upcoming @nytimes Sunday Review"

Really interesting article about "Biosphere 2" the fact they couldn't get it to work (whatever that means) makes this experiment even more important if you ask me (eg we are screwing up Biosphere1 in ways we might never be able to fix)

The B-Side

Jodie and I went to see The B-Side at St Anns last night.

I dont know who is doing the curation for productions there but we've been to see 3 plays there in the last 12 months and they've all been an absolute success.

Its too complicated to encompass what The B-side is like to see, however just to say.....if you ever hear me complain about my life - feel free to knock me on the side of a head with an axe.

We live such sheltered privileged life we couldnt imagine/know a bad day if we tried. I have a feeling i'll be thinking about TB Bee's and Ratler for a while.

New Logitech MX518 Optical Mouse

Ok so I was all excited to hear that Logitech was finally bringing out a new version of the MX518 mouse.....which means I can finally replace my ancient MX518 that keeps working fine so still my preferred mouse BUT bits of the plastic etc are worn away...... so looks like hell.

Ok the new one arrived today and still getting used to it, considering I just disconnected my old mx518 mouse (eg. at least 10 years+ old, couldn't find receipt its that old) this new mouse has some big shoes to fill........and so far im not impressed.

3 issues ive identified so far.

1/ the cable is much thinner than the old one.......which means it no longer stays fitted into the chase space beneath my G11 keyboard. Not sure if this is a new standard size and they've been like that for years......but basically couldn't discretely hide the wiring like I could with the old one.

2/ you cant actually plug it into the G11 keyboard like you could the old one.....basically it says hub overpowered - I assume some time in the last decade they changed the power specs and this isn't solvable......basically means couldn't discretely hide the wiring like I could with the old one........

3/ and this is my biggest problem-though probably easiest one to fix. Ive always used the assignable thumb keys as scroll up and scroll down........for some reason scroll up and scroll down is not available on the assign feature......like seriously?? who thought that was ok? They got next music track, or next tab.....but not scroll up and down so the only way to scroll is using the wheel??

Update on the scroll issue - see in the comments section below

Amazon HQ2

Wondering if the Amazon HQ2 thing is making the news in Sydney?

eg. Are people understanding the ramifications and drawing parallels to the fact that now that NY has driven away 25,000 tax paying jobs that the $27B in tax revenues that went with it now have to be generated from property taxes.

I mean seriously who in this photo protesting Amazon is going to generate $27B in taxes from their corporation/startup?

Disjointed thinking here but there needs to be a public dialog something along the lines of.....you can either encourage business growth by implementing good infrastructure/trains etc OR businesses will go elsewhere AND then all you have left to generate government income is property taxes. eg is Sydney really doing enough to encourage new business formation OR is it losing that business formation to other states/other countries.

I still find it hard to comprehend that every reporter in Australia isnt writing weekly articles about how the NBN fucked over the economy and that politicians arent being hung from the streetlights....but what do i know….. I also think that the decision to put a rail line in Sydney out to NSW Uni and NOT put it underground is the stupidest thing ive heard this decade and should result in an immediate loss of office for the politicians who approved it.

Im just glad that NZ exists and their success with 1gb fiber (now moving to 10gb) and love pointing it out anytime anti-NBN voters raise their heads saying “it cant be done”.

Hot potato Hot Potato who has the gold.....?

And Americans want to complain about Russians buying facebook ads.....

Whats going to be really interesting is to see how much the price of gold goes up as now that these bars are beign prevented from leaving and "removed" from general circulation they need to be documented and serialised - oh and a number of other countries are probably going to be thinking hmmmm maybe we should pull ours now rather than later.

Ultraviolet closing down

Just received an email to say that the Ultraviolet streaming service is closing down...... so anyone that purchased/relies on Ultraviolet to watch their movies.....I guess you are SOOL (Shit Out Of Luck).

Yet again another streaming service (this one with major players and funders) is shutting down. I'll add it to my list of streaming content providers where you thought you were buying/paying for content.....but instead you were only purchasing a revocable license.

I'll stick to buying my content on BluRay, DVD and CD and rip the content to my own media service where I can continue to access it forever (or until I can no longer source players to rip the content......considering they pulled headphone jacks from iPhones its not entirely out of the realm of possibility).

I've always kept but just never used the UV codes that came with BluRays also I've purchased a number of BluRays 'second hand but in mint condition' having come without the codes (eg people buy them retail then sell without the code and just use UV). I guess I was getting the better end of the bargain after all.

Wonder if any lawyers are putting together a UV class action suit......I could have quite a case now I can no longer access UltraViolet content :)

RIP Ultraviolet..... along with Zune library, Yahoo Music, Walmart MP3 streaming service etc etc etc

How did i miss Split/Unbreakable tie-in?

I rewatched #Unbreakable and #Split on BluRay this weekend in anticipation of seeing #Glass on Friday, they actually held up really well and watching them back to back like that made the trilogy building aspects much more noticeable.

Also was super weird it wasn't obvious when watching #Split at the movies a few years ago that it was obviously a sequel to #Unbreakable ....but didnt think about the obvious tie-ins until the coffee shop scene.

How the heck did I miss it first time around??

LNP now claiming Labors plan for LTCG is wrong......or is it?

Interesting how the LNP are now saying Labors proposal for removing LTCG discount for real estate is a bad idea

When it was the LNP that screwed over hard working Aussie expats in the first place removing our LTCG discounts in the first place.

lol....so which is it Josh?.... a good idea or a bad idea?
