Hypothesis (http://hypothes.is/) is a remake of "The Third Voice" with additional functionality (Haha at video 3.10 = Nothing is new)
I wonder how many newbies actually remember "The Third Voice" and what a big deal it was.
Cheers,
Dean

lol spoken in the voice of "ALL YOU BASE ARE BELONG TO US"
Hahahaha lol so Neomedia says i can no longer encode a URL in a QR code eg index.html OR page1.html without paying them money
What a bunch of jokers.

Partial Indirect, often referred to as Managed Direct
http://www.neom.com/resources/white_papers/2d-mobile-barcodes-definitive-guide PAGE 7
There is also a third kind of mobile barcode, sometimes called a ‘partial indirect’ or ‘managed direct’ barcode, that provides many of the best features (and some of the limitations) of both direct and indirect mobile codes. Referring to this type of mobile barcode as a version of ‘direct’ is in fact a misnomer, in that any barcode that includes an index and thus requires a resolution server, is by definition ‘indirect’. Thus, the term 'partial indirect’ is the more accurate description.

Referring to this type of mobile barcode as a version of ‘direct’ is in fact a misnomer, in that any barcode that includes an index and thus requires a resolution server, is by definition ‘indirect’. Thus, the term 'partial indirect’ is the more accurate description.
A partial indirect barcode contains a fully formatted URL so it can be read, like a direct code, by any mobile code reader that is capable of reading a mobile code’s symbology (e.g. in the case of QR mobile codes, any QR reader), but it also contains an index, so that when it is sent to the site indicated by the URL it functions as an indirect code.
Partial indirect mobile barcodes have the advantages of not requiring a specific preinstalled or downloaded client and of being intermediated by the server designated in the mobile code’s URL, so they can be both monitored and managed. But they have the disadvantages of being larger, unless carefully designed (because they contain both the URL and the index – more characters), and of not providing ancillary profiled routing information that is passed with the URL such as psychographics and demographics, if they are not processed by a client application on the mobile device, since this transaction-specific information is not contained in the code URL.
One approach is to use partial indirect barcodes to provide universal reach (e.g. to phones equipped with any QR reader) but to invite the consumer to download the reader application in order to attract indirect barcode clients capable of collecting and passing transactional information to the server.

Times change
Its interesting to see how things change over time.
At one time in the far far history “Third Voice” was seen as a game changer that had site admins outraged.
…and today - http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/09/03/1611214/Google-To-Shut-Down-10-Products googles version of it “sidewiki” is being shut down due to lack of interest.

Augmented 'tags'
Came across this article today;
http://www.ugotrade.com/2009/01/17/is-it-%e2%80%9comg-finally%e2%80%9d-for-augmented-reality-interview-with-robert-rice/
(hi nathan, discussion about digital compasses for another time).
If digital graffiti tags 'are' the future, does this mean we are going to see a repeat of the "Third Voice" court case?
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/11/five_years_ago/
Personally I'm not sure how thrilled Victoria Secret is going to feel about someone tagging one of their stores in New York with a bukkake picture you took of their latest catalog.
Cheers,
Dean
P.S. Yeh thats a totally patentable idea, augmented reality 'spam checking' - has my corporate locations been tagged with anything disagreeable and tools to do something about it - have fun and dont forget to send me my 5%. :)

Global Disparity
So some of you may, or may not know, that my dad also works in the IT space as well, though we come from very very different backgrounds in that he is an old school telco guy who for the last 20 years or so has work on some amazing projects all around the world often in third world countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia (though that's hardly 3rd world), but also in some middle eastern countries like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Lately he's been specialising in implementing GSM networks in greenfield sites and with my involvement in Voip and smart voice applications it's been an interesting dichotomy between our views (not that I have anywhere near his experience).
Currently he is in Sierra Leone as a turnaround CTO of a GSM carrier there.
When talking with him recently he commented that this carrier was still yet to even implement GPRS services and that it wasn't even on the radar.
As I look down at my $500 cingular 8525 - 3g handset with Windows mobile 5 push email, internet explorer browser and 2gb SD card.......you really have to wonder how fair is this?
And what can i do about it?
....or even a deeper question - Should (even if I could) do something about it or is this the way it is and always meant to be?
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Dean

LiveFyre "introduces" Sidenotes
Livefyre wants to bring its social commenting system not only to every story on the Web, but also to every paragraph, block quote and image. With its new Sidenotes feature launching today at Salon and Fox Business

Only 15 years to the day since "Third Voice" was launched a new and improved "official" on page commenting system - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/11/five_years_ago

Wave Robots for Spam
I was thinking about one this morning that if 'Outlook' became Wave enabled could better quality spam filters be built? eg if i right click 'this is spam' and 1,000 other people in the next hour post.... this is spam.... and my Outlook client was Wave Protocol enabled couldn't this deliver better real time spam protection?
Also another thought was could you do a 'third voice' style system for all web pages where your web browser became Wave enabled - people would vote up or down content Digg Style (or even down to 'paragraphs of content') on a web page where you would see a heat map style system on all web pages for sections that people liked. Kind of like Delicious but real time and more granular.
