Apple AIR

Ahh crap – looks like I’m finally going to have to buy an Apple – this new Macbook Air laptop that they are demonstrating is insane. http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/01/15/apple.macworld.ap/index.html

I cant believe how thin it is.

It's things like this that drive me crazy about the lack of 'R&D' in the PC industry. Where are the PC/Windows version of automatic backup over the wifi network - where is the windows version of super thin laptops with solid state hard drives....?

Is this a reflection of Apples 'reasonable pricing' strategies (and by reasonable I mean pricing where they can still make a profit and therefor fund R&D). Is the problem with windows development a lack up profitability?

  1. Few companies in the tech space understand the high value of DESIGN - Apple pursues a purity of design at all levels that elevates its products to perfection. I am referencing industrial design, software design, usability design, aesthetics design, etc. etc. in every aspect. Even the size and profile of exposed mini-screws! I love to take a stroll to my local local Best Buy here in downtown Toronto and walk down the PC laptop aisle to witness the monstrosities being sold to hapless everyday Windows users. Ten full years after the first iMac, these manufacturers still do not get it. Design values are what people seek and are willing to pay for. Why does the PC market not respond???

  3. One additional observation that I omitted -- I do acknowledge that a handful of manufacturers of high-end gaming PCs apply effective design elements for that specialized market. It's more of a packaging and peripherals focus, rather than holistic across the software and hardware (as with Apple). And for those who may ask, no I do NOT reference Sony Vaio as a design-savvy PC brand.
