Watching the watchers who are watching you watching

I'm curious....am I the only one who WONT be purchasing a tv with a camera.......

While Samsung isn’t going into too much detail, it says its new gesture system will let users change the channel, adjust the volume, and even stop playback via an “intuitive” counterclockwise twirl of the finger.  (Let’s just hope Samsung’s gesture recognition system is precise enough to actually pick up that sort of granularity on a consistent basis.)

Its not like in these days of Snowden/NSA/RSA debacles I have anything to base my fears on....oh yeh that's right I do - http://www.pcworld.com/article/2066400/lg-smart-tvs-share-data-about-users-files-and-viewing-habits-with-the-company.html

So i'm curious, if you own an xbox one did you spring for the camera and do you leave the camera permanently watching you and your family and or if you are in the market for a new tv in 2014.......would you prefer it comes without a camera......? Or am I the only luddite in the group.

Old school crack by audio

I remember reading about how secure rooms couldn't have telephones in them because there was an old school hack where you could use the copper cables at the exchange to pick up the sound from the telephone handset microphone even though it was sitting in the receiver......old school meet new school.

http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/173108-researchers-crack-the-worlds-toughest-encryption-by-listening-to-the-tiny-sounds-made-by-your-computers-cpu

This is insane on so many levels, so basically if you put your cell phone near your laptop and then "open" your files while someone is performing an open mic listen......they can reverse engineering your passcode by listening to the sounds your cpu makes while processing the code.
Basically its "listening" to the electronic signals as it passes through the circuits.

Are we truly in a time where anything and everything is open and does this change how we "do things". Is it "all out there" and we just need to know how to "listen to the ether Mal".

Be responsible for the actions of your employers

Great…..i hated Boston Dynamics before so now they work for Google I can hate them twice as much

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/14/technology/google-adds-to-its-menagerie-of-robots.html?_r=0

Google confirmed on Friday that it had completed the acquisition of Boston Dynamics,

The scientists and developers that work for Boston Dynamics have no soul.

Essentially paraphrasing the argument something like this…….wake up snapperheads when your boss tells you to develop something think about what its going to be used for and can your soul really put up with the outcomes.
Eg I don’t blame the politicians….they’re brainless, and until a Big Dog runs onto the floor of congress laden with explosives they wont understand what they funded was wrong.

But the developers and scientists working for Boston Dynamics have a brain and they should be really thinking more than 3 steps ahead is this where I really want to be spending my lifes work on.

Lol its like the Madoff programmers who claim its not their fault this week……seriously dudes you deserve as much time as your bosses as they couldn’t have done it without you.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-12-10/ex-madoff-programmers-sought-pay-in-diamonds-jury-told.html

As for the aregument about how I’d prefer robots to do it rather than soldiers……yeh nice retort, Hitler also claimed gas showers were efficient so therefor better than lining them up to be shot one by one……I guess that makes it ok.

How random is random?

Interesting move by BSD - http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/12/we-cannot-trust-intel-and-vias-chip-based-crypto-freebsd-developers-say/

A question raised in the comments was  “would the government really force intel etc to compromise…….security with the shortsighted view that their own computers could be hacked…..using the same tool”, based on previous efforts with stuxnet technology now in the wild I would say…..no this kind of thinking wouldn’t stop them from moving forward.

The naysayers are probably saying now that….no way could you do this as would require too many people to be in the know that the NSA had backdoored all intel chips – my answer to that is 40,000 people had access to the NSA data that Snowden did……and he was the only one who thought to say…..hey this is a bad thing and we need to do something to stop it.

For me personally that’s been the scariest aspect of the entire Snowden revelations.

Smart Bluetooth - Estimote

http://techcrunch.com/2013/12/10/ibeacon-pioneers-estimote-raise-3-1m-seed-round

Jakub Krzych, founder of Estimote, has announced a $3.1 million seed round raise from Innovation Endeavors, Betaworks, Bessemer Venture Partners, Birchmere Ventures, Valiant Capital Partners and others. The company is already shipping its small Bluetooth products, called Beacons, to retailers and they expect a huge rush in orders as they line up large clients next year.

I haven't looked into the API but apparently your phone will ignore the Smart Bluetooth datagram UNLESS you have the app installed that recognizes that particular message........

.....which begs the next question who is really going to have 10 different smart Bluetooth apps running on their handset eg the Macy's app, the Starbucks app, the Apple Store app. Eg it makes sense for the "turn on as you come into a zone" like the mlb baseball stadium feature but apart from that.....hmmm not sure about this.

Technically its not cold in space

Wow this just blew my mind, doing research on space and cooling etc......only to realize that obviously space is a vacuum.... and because it is a vacuum there is nothing to "pass off" heat to (eg you don't have "wind" blowing against you that can allow heat to "escape").

What this means is that although "pure space" is only 3 degrees kelvin (its not zero kelvin because of background radiation so even if something isn't in direct view of the sun (eg dark side of a planet) it will never get to zero - that if a warm body was "thrown into space" doesn't get super cold very fast but instead takes time to lose its heat through "radiant" heat only.

There are very few molecules to "pass off" heat like wind/touch etc does here on earth.

No wonder there is court backlog

In small claims court at the moment (claimant) wow how inefficient is the whole process and worse the defendant (ConEd electricity) is asking for an application (delay) they've only had the facts of the case since May 31st 2013 (damages were made on the 8th of Feb 2013)

Basically case has been held over until May 2014 because ConEd says....I've just been apprised of the case.....even though I registered with the clerk that I was ready to proceed and the lawyer was served with the subpoena in July......

......no wonder the court case load is so backed up.....nothing gets dealt with.

Yeh uhm ZipCar ....you suck

Yes the car was returned 8 minutes late yesterday, however I think this fee should have been reversed

1/ I stopped to fill up on the way back because even though it wasn’t quite less than ¼ full I hate how hard it is to get gas so I made the extra effort as I was near Atlantic avenue the only gas station in our area of Brooklyn so the next person didn't need to waste 5 minutes driving the other direction to fill up (check out the total pumped in you’ll see that it wasnt below ¼)

2/ I couldn’t GET MY CAR OUT of the garage before 9 minutes after my starting time because it was blocked in by other cars and the attendants at henry street suck

3/ I didn’t ask to be rebated when 2-3 weeks ago that I tried to book a zip car and the car wouldn’t let me get access when I arrived for 15 minutes (resulting in 2 calls to customer support)
and lastly

4/ last month when I couldn’t even find where in the garage the attendant parked your car because you refuse to pay for dedicated spots for each car (I only booked for 1 hour so after 10 minutes I left to catch a cab as was running late) that when I called the customer support person I got “lip” about how I should have called from the garage instead of leaving in the cab……I told her don’t bother crediting my account I’m happy to eat it but her attitude sucked.

You know what after writing all of these 5 points……I’m happy to eat the 8 minute late fee…….but I want you to understand WHY there are more and more zip cars sitting in parking lots…..not because people aren’t renting cars but because your attitude stinks.

Cheers,
Dean

Bitcoin ATM's

What are your thoughts on bitcoin atm’s…..how many countries are really going to allow anonymous purchases before they crack down?

Is there really enough money in the “exchange transactional fees” to make this work in enough friendly locations?

I keep wondering if I’m standing on the sidelines of the great monetary change of our time…..or watching the start of the Dutch Tulip mania.

Lou Reed has passed away at 71

Lou Reed, a massively influential songwriter and guitarist who helped shape nearly fifty years of rock music, died today.

More at:
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/lou-reed-velvet-underground-leader-and-rock-pioneer-dead-at-71-20131027

Very very thankful Jodie and I got to see him play live a few years ago up close and personal at a relatively small gig, one of our highlight of living in NY and happening to be at the right place at the right time - even in his late 60's he was a major force on stage and had a sold out crowd pumped for the whole 2 hours from start to finish - http://blog.collins.net.pr/2008/05/lou-reed.html

StopWatching.us rally

There was a StopWatching.us rally in Washington DC yesterday and Jodie and I bussed down.

Smaller than I would have hoped for, and sometimes I want to grab people by the shoulders and shake people saying "you get the government you deserve......."

Best quote I heard of the day......"who here thinks NSA surveillance is still about fighting terrorism".

Was also really surprised at what a powerhouse speaker a Dennis Kucinich was, I'll have to check out more of what he's got to say as most forthright politician I heard all day.

Was also interesting to see how Chinese CCTV was there covering an "anti-government protest about state surveillance", i'm wondering how that was presented "back home". Also saw Turkish/German and of course the Russian RT channel covering the protest. Strange bedfellows indeed. What a world we live in today.

Did the President notice.....nope, Are the NSA cowering....nope, did we achieve anything....nope BUT if you don't stand up to be counted.....then you don't get to complain after the fact.

City ‘cleans up’ after Banksy art

They may not know art, but they know what they don’t like.

The Parks Department called in its big guns Thursday to try and remove a Banksy work overlooking the Brooklyn Heights promenade.

Went down to look at it today and found this article after googling why I couldn't find it.

And when you consider this is how the city leaves mess all over the streets just blocks from this it is a fucking crime that they did this in less than 3 days.

Sennheiser PC 320

You know when you put something on and it just feels.....right....

Yep just purchased a replacement set of headphones - check out the Sennheiser PC 320 at Amazon - http://bit.ly/pc320headset

The obvious design upgrade from the Sennheiser PC151 model that I had is that now they don't have the "inline control" for volume and mic mute which is where my last pair failed.

Basically the volume is now a rotating disc on the outside of the right ear and the mic is an automatic switch when you raise and low the mic boom.

By solving this issue along with thicker and stronger molding near the plugs, hopefully this will last longer than the 29 months for my last pair.

The World Is Flat was written less than 10 years ago

This blows my mind, when you consider the changes we've had in 9 years.

This screen capture I took was in 2012, but the point still rings true since 2004 we've had Facebook, Twitter, 4g, Skype (iPhone/Andoid isn't mentioned but they've both happened since then as well).

Visual Studio 2005 setup problems "insert dvd"

Long story but I needed to install an old copy of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 standard and kept having problems with the same error each time  "please the disk: Visual Studio 2005 dvd"

Hopefully through the magic of SEO this blog post will turn up in your google search and solve you time.

Basically half way through the installation each time I would get the same error

There is an easy solution but I could never find it documented anywhere.

I solve it sharing my dvd from another pc eg \\PC2\DVD and then run setup.exe from this location on PC1

I have no idea why this solved the problem and found it by accident.

No this wasn't a pirated copy, no the dvd itself wasn't scratched or damaged. Basically something wrong with the pressing from Microsoft back in 2006 (or more likely something wrong with installing it onto a modern windows 7 64bit pc).

Either way once you load the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 setup.exe it from a remote directory.......problem goes away :)

Facebook Inc.'s FB -2.23% sprawling campus in Menlo Park, Calif., is so full of cushy perks that some employees may never want to go home. Soon, they'll have that option.
The social network said this week it is working with a local developer to build a $120 million, 394-unit housing community within walking distance of its offices. Called Anton Menlo, the 630,000 square-foot rental property will include everything from a sports bar to a doggy day care.

Some people seem really surprised about this but keep in mind that this was the way the majority of businesses ran for the majority of humans entrepreneurial existence.

Warning to any and all Cyberpower PR2200LCDRTXL2U owners (or for that matter CyberPower PR3000LCDRTXL2U and possibly other models)

I purchased a Cyberpower PR2200LCDRTXL2U ups in late 2009 (receipt below), the first non-APC unit we’ve purchased.

On Thursday the 12th of September we were moving the server rack from one room to another. Probably as far as I know the first time the UPS has ever been powered down (but cant confirm that).

When the unit was installed in its new location we tried to power it up only to find no response with the switch (but yes as it’s a mechanical switch was working fine and depressed half way etc).

Please understand prior to moving it NO INDICATION OF ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL otherwise heck I would have never powered it down and just left it running while moving it to the new physical location. It is a UPS after all.

Three very disturbing facts have become apparent to me about the CyberPower company and their products after speaking with their tech support on Thursday afternoon.

1/ If the battery is “unsuitable” and past its ability to hold 100% charge the runs a “smart test” and unit wont power up-however gives no indication this is the issue, design flaw on two levels but their replacement price of about $150 for batteries is reasonable (well compared to APC anyway) but I find this a major design flaw that even though the unit may have never given a “replace battery” warning a company could be left without access to a UPS if the batteries were past date and then need to wait 1-2 days for a delivery.

However after testing with a multimeter this is not the issue here.

2/ That although Cyberpower has a 3 year warranty their answer to what do I do with this now that I’ve found out its not a battery problem is …..”junk it”.

Even though only 4 years old their response is we carry no service parts in the USA, we provide no repair capabilities in the USA, and if the unit is newer than 36 months eg "IN WARRANTY" we’ll swap it for anew one (one way shipping covered) BUT after that their only response is only to “junk it”.

HOWEVER THAT ISNT THE MOST DISTURBING PART

3/ After checking the batteries were fine, and the switch was working, I thought I’d look over the rest only to find it immediately obvious what the issue is.

There are two capacitors located right next to the heat sink (a terrible design flaw to begin with) and these Su'scon 2200uF 63v capacitors had bulged and leaked.

So basically for the cost of 2 x 50c capacitors CyperPower is telling me to junk an $800 unit!!!

As discussed this could be a major sleeping issue. At no time was there an indication of any problems, the unit has been operating faithfully with no issues. The servers connected to this have never had any power issues. No indication at all of problems……JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE CYBERPOWER customers out there.

This model has been sold since 2008 I understand and is still the current model being sold. How many other Cyberpower PR2200LCDRTXL2U (or for that matter CyberPower PR3000LCDRTXL2U owners) have this sleeping issue waiting to bite them because

1/ Cyberpower bought cheap OR faulty capacitors not up to design specifications
Or
2/ Cyberpower designed capacitors too close to the heat sink.

As for Cyberpowers customer support saying….junk it and 4 years is reasonable lifespan for an $800 item…..I find that unacceptable considering it can be repaired with 2 x 50c capacitors.

For CyberPower customer service operator “Cal” he refused to give me his surname….. to say this capacitor leaking issue isn’t a big deal because they’ve never heard of it (possibly lying) but the fact that 4 out of 5 UPS’s probably never get powered down so wont become an issue until a customer turns the unit off and then tries to turn it back on is what I have an issue with.

Like I said….i wonder how many other Cyberpower / PC Nation customers have “passed their warranty period” blissfully ignorant their capacitors have failed as well.

So if you own a Cyberpower PR2200LCDRTXL2U  (or CyberPower PR3000LCDRTXL2U as same model different capacity and possibly other models) ....you might want to turn it off at 35 months and check you don't have a warranty issue.

Electrolux you suck with your obvious planned obsolescence

So I came home from walking the dog last night to my wife letting me know that the microwave door wouldn't close and it wasn't her fault she used it to make coffee and just no longer worked.....arghforgetaboutit screw it lets watch the movie and worry about it tomorrow.

So after lunch today I finally went all right lets see if this is repair guy time/throw it out the window time/or easy fix time.

Hey Electrolux....you suck!!!

We spent over 8k on 4 different appliances (stove/fridge/dishwasher/microwave all because I happened to like your stove top design) and after only 4 years this "obvious planned obsolescence" that finally gave way is what you want me to replace my entire unit for.

Basically as you can see here, these "hooks" are meant to be spring loaded and close down when you push the door shut.

But because of this shitty little piece of plastic which held the tension spring in place the spring was rattling around inside of the door.

To be honest I cant believe it lasted this long its so thin and obviously prone to breaking.

I called PC Richards and yes of course this unit is now out of warranty so I would be up for a call out fee AND of course any parts (read probably replace the entire door) that needed replacing.

Yeh hold that appointment thanks.

15 minutes later and 6 screws had the door apart I could see where the plastic had snapped (seriously cant believe it lasted 3 years and is obviously designed so you will buy a new microwave).

I thought of drilling a hole on the plastic frame where the plastic snapped and then thought, nah screw it, the metal opposite it makes much more sense...... (hey Electrolux designers...send my design consulting fee in beer thanks).

3 mins later with my dremel, shazam

Door locks now have tension

And presto all fixed..... Electrolux you still suck.....but I love how you are still nice and shiny :)

Bananarama - Love In The First Degree....and...."What the heck did we do before the internet"?

What the heck did we do before the internet?

I am doing some LFC work on the pc this afternoon with the mp3's in random play mode only to hear "Love In The First Degree"...come up on the rotation and I was like wow I don't listen to Bananarama enough.

And then I was like whatever happened to them and fired up wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bananarama reading about how Siobhan Fahey left to go off an form Shakespears Sister which is actually quite cool because
1/ I didn't know that it was the same person
and
2/ I actually have two of their cd's....ok I actually have an ex girlfriends cd's (Hi Dorianne!!) but hey they are here in NY and ripped to my media server so I was like cool I should listen to them and then played them back to back while working and thought, whatever happened to them ......

Only to find out one went crazy (oh and was married to Dave Stewart....which is weird as I thought Annie Lennox was married to Dave Stewart....but guess not) and the other one was name Marcella Detroit and .....wait what!!...I have two of her cd's as well, so fired them up and went back to work.

So i'll ask you again.....what the heck did we do before the internet.

Ian Mitchell-Innes interview

Listening to Ian Mitchell-Innes interview, cost of petrol should be $50 a liter if you actually did the calculation of the costs in plating a tree, letting it decompose into carbon and get buried and then wait for it turn into oil.

When you think about it makes a LOT of sense.

I also really like his thoughts on overgrazing (around the 15min mark) and it being TIME not DENSITY.

101 domains.com genius marketing

Some great ideas being implemented by 101domain for authentication to prevent NYtimes/Twitter style DNS hacks.

I’m wondering how many of us have the domain “worth” or volume of domains to make the “one time password security card” a worthwhile option.

Still a great idea to turn a “crisis” into a marketing opportunity 
